New Floating Action, Golden Boots, and Frequency Ghost and Cheap AF Bundles!

Well, are you bored yet? I am.

But, we've got a bunch of new releases that have been in the pipeline, so I've had time to finish them and spend some real nice quality time with my Cricut scrapbooking cutter making die cut sleeves (which, like most of my past-times is constantly shifting blend of cartharsis and aggravation). I also got back down to The Lathe Cave to grind out some 10”s (which I rarely do), and we've been getting them sound niiiiiice recently.

This Edition:

1- New Floating Action LP “Outsider Art” up for preorde
2- Golden Boots – Cowboy Kiosk 10” (plus free livestream on April 4th)
3- Frequency Ghost (Adam from Amo Joy/SM wolf) new instrumental EP
4- New Cheap AF Bundles – Pressed 7”s, Tapes, and CD-Records.

FLOATING ACTION - OUTSIDER ART LP

Another year, another badass "last record ever" for Floating Action (this is Seths' Fifth Final Record for those keeping track (and yes, I fully grasp the irony/hypocrisy of me, of all people, poking fun at him for it)).

The pressing is delayed due to plant closures at the Artwork Printer, but we got the test pressings in and they sound GREAT!

The Official Outsider Art Blurb:

Seth Kauffman has been releasing Floating Action albums lately as if the world is ending...oh wait, it might BE ending. This newest Floating Action album 'Outsider Art', is Seth's 11th album in the last 14 years, and the 5th PIAPTK release in the last 5 years. That's over 130 original songs.

Floating Action's catalog is truly outsider art, as the music industry has largely shunned everything Floating Action. But it's these records, thankfully, that have found their way to more successful artists like Dan Auerbach, Jack Johnson, Jim James, Dr. Dog and countless more - who have freaked out, become fans, and kept Kauffman afloat by having him play on their records & tour with them (which consequently makes it possible for Floating Action albums to keep getting made.)

It's a bassackwards (truly outsider) route for sure, but we'll take it. Kauffman hadn't planned on creating another Floating Action record any time soon, after 2019's 'Old World Camels'. But last October, he was suddenly hit with a giant cluster of new ideas, and began recording them. "They were so bursting with freshness, and super original...and they just all came to me at once, I just had to get them down fast. I had just gotten this weird delay pedal that uses real cassette tape, and this really cheap amazon.com house brand (SET5) amplifier - which served as that 'perfect piece of new gear to get your juices flowing'.

In classic Floating Action form, there are catchy-but-deep-cut funky jamaican/afro grooves on 'Outsider Art', airtight arrangements, highly melodic throughout, heavy philosphy hidden in code in the lyrics, extremely original and not really very like anything else. Also unique to 'Outsider Art', is a constant thread of positivity in the lyrics, as well as an underlying theme of ancient Chinese wisdom and its connection to trees.

Catch Floating Action on tour in your town....oh wait...live music may no longer exist... In the meantime, let 'Outsider Art' lift your spirit in these trying times.

GOLDEN BOOTS – COWBOY KIOSK 10” EP

The last few years have seen huge burst of productivity and musical exploration from one PIAPTK's oldest mainstays and Tucson legends, Golden Boots.

After spending their last few releases exploring instrumentals, drone, and casio-core, their new EP, Cowboy Kiosk is a return to the "Crumbly Western" vibe of their earlier output. This EP also features the addition of drummer Tommy Larkins, Jonathan Richman's long time drummer. You might remember him from his cameos with Jonathan in Something About Mary and Kingpin. Regardless, dude is a badass.

Ltd ed of 35 copies on white vinyl 10" with black diecut covers. If they sell out super fast, I might consider making a second run on black vinyl with white covers, who knows? It's a badass EP and I don't want folks to miss out on it.

You can preview it or buy it on tape or CD (and also pick up some of the other stuff they've been working on/dragging out of the closet at their bandcamp: https://goldenboots.bandcamp.com/

Here is the blurb from the band:

"Cowboy Kiosk" was intended to be pressed as a three song 7" for a May 2020 tour of Germany and France. THEN COVID-19 came and no more tour... but now "Cowboy Kiosk" comes back as a 5 song tape and CD :-)

ALSO! LIVE STREAM ON APRIL 4th!
Golden Boots are doing a live stream from Ryens House on April 4th. Details here: https://www.facebook.com/goldenbootsband/ the Event is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/245005906892881/

FREQUENCY GHOST – AROUND THE WORLD IN 68 DAYS 10” EP

In the Spring of 2019, Adam Gross of Amo Joy and SM Wolf got divorced, had to sell his house, and decided to quit his longtime job of teaching elementary special education. In the midst of a pre-mid-life crisis, Adam decided to take some of the money from the sale of his house and travel, booking a tour in Japan, going to Thailand, and traveling all over Europe to "find himself" (or at least have a good time). I was fortunate enough to meet up with him in Italy to tour manage his 3 weeks of show dates in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and to hop down for a few days in Marrakech. I've traveled with a LOT of people over the years, and Adam is pretty high on the list of my favorites. On this 10 week world tour, living out of a backpack, Adam recorded this EP on his laptop using Korg Volcakeys, a Teenage Engineering PO-12, and an Akai Rhythm Wolf.

Could totally be the 8 bit soundtrack to the Beverly Hills Cop Super NES game.

Limited to 30 copies on clear vinyl lathe cuts with die cut sleeves, all of which are backed with a unique photo I took of the incredible tilework we saw all over Porto and Aveiro Portugal. If you haven't ever been to Portugal, I HIGHLY recommend it. That place is incredible.

In Adam's Words:

I recorded this album mainly while travelling on a very lucky trip around the world in the summer of 2019. PUMP was recorded in Indianapolis right before I left home. DOZO was recorded in Tokyo, Japan. SLEEPER No. 51 was recorded in a sleeper car on a train between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Thailand. MONK'S TRAIL was recorded in Chiang Mai. LE TOUR DU MONDE is a sound collage of field recordings from that summer including the last day of school before summer break and my last day as a teacher in Indianapolis, an early sketch for a commercial song, a plane taking off and landing, a Tokyo train, a Thai beach, a Buddhist prayer in Thailand, a Christian prayer at the Vatican, an Islamic Prayer in Marrakesh, Morocco a late night teen drum group and street musicians in Marrakesh, and a guitar piece from the week I returned home.

CHEAP AF BUNDLES

Well, they can't all be megahits... Over the years I've released over 300 records. And they are all great! But, some of them have yet to find the audience they deserve, and rather than having these things sitting in my basement studio, I would rather get them out to adventurous folks who will appreciate them, so here are some bundles for you to consider:

Early 7” releases 5x 7” Bundle -$11.11
These all date from the first five years of PIAPTK. They are all really great little singles/EPs, and you can have ALL FIVE for $11.11. Includes: Southerly/Protest Hill split 7” - PDX Indie Pop. Jescos – Topless Cowgirl – great, but criminally short lived “super group” of Wooden Wand plus The Mendoza Line. The Crash That Took Me: Unreleased Songs – Super group of the best bands in Dallas in the early aughts. Spaced-out Power Pop. Carcrashlander – All Yall – This is a seriously great 4 song EP from PDXs multi-instrumentalist Cory Gray who has ties to Graves, The Dodos, Decemberists, etc. I really love this record and am bummed it never really took off. R Stevie Moore/Billy Anderson Split 7” - Split between “the godfather of Lo-fi” and one of his childhood friends and occasional collaborator.

13 Cassette Grabbag - $29.99
I've dipped my toes into the cassette market over the years, but, they've never really taken off with yall, so, I need to get them outta here. Get 13 different PIAPTK and Soild Gold tapes for $29.99. Pic is an example, but each one may vary slightly.

Casey Golden - II Lp

Casey Golden was one of my favorite Tucson songwriters before he moved to LA. And now he is one of my favorite LA songwriters!

Recorded on a day off in Cologne, Germany during a European tour in 2018, Casey Golden’s II is a true snapshot into an artist's life during a period of transformation - one that showcases Golden’s most personal work to date. Backed up by his “dream” band, Connor Gallaher (Calexico), Andrew Collburg (Howe Gelb), and Grant Beyschau (The Myrrors), the album incorporates textures reminiscent of Alice Coltrane, fuzed out psych freakouts that nod to the Tropicalia movement, and an emphasis on harmony and melodic turnaround that could only be taught by such pop masterminds as Margo Guryan and Burt Bacharach, who weren't afraid of using big emotional language when writing about love. This isn't entirely a hark back to the past however, its Golden’s voice - an angelic whisper that pops straight out of the speakers and feels like a pillow where you can lay your head for the night. It’s an introverts venture into the real world of 2019.

Michael Nau - a few more Less Ready To Go Deluxe Edition 2xLP Released, along with some super limited Jellybean" vinyl editions! - These sold out in a couple days. I always undersell new preorder releases just in case there is an under-run from the pressing plant, the USPS damages some, etc. In this case, neither happened, AND my buddy at the pressing plant made about 20 copies of both LPs on random "jellybean" colors, just for giggles. I personally, prefer the classic, matching, white vinyl version, but if you like them colors, or just want the rarest variant, I guess this is it.

3 New Instant Merch Machine Releases! Fruit Bats! Simon Joyner! Adam Ostrar!

Hi there everybody! Sorry to hit ya up so soon, but you know how it goes... we are always working on something, and we just hit a real solid lick this week with rad artists coming through Tucson and knocking out some Instant Merch Machine 7"s!

(BTW, we only have 20 copies of the Deluxe 2xLP edition of the new Michael Nau LP preorder left... then the bonus disc and the white vinyl will be gone forever. PICK ONE UP HERE)

New Instant Merch Machine Releases from Fruit Bats, Simon Joyner, Adam Ostrar (Manishevitz)!

Instant Merch Machine is a series of lathe cut clear plastic squares that we do in the Lathe Cave for friends and artists passing through town with a few extra hours to kill. We cut records for them while they hand make covers, and we make however many we can in a few hours. They take half with them for their merch tables, and we keep half to sell. The format is always a little different. Sometimes it's a new track, a remix, etc and sometimes they play live, straight into the machines for a direct to disc sesh.

Fruit Bats - Ltd Ed of 82 -
Eric D. Johnson came down and record some covers direct to the lathes! 7 or 8 copies of each song. There were two themes represented of covers, but we can't tell you what they were. It's a secret. Because live to disc is pretty tricky, some of them will be a little quiet, some will be a little loud and slightly blown out, some might have a skip where he got real loud on the mic, but they are all made in real time and are a relic of the moment. After the session we went back to my house and sat around making covers with paint, glitter, googly eyes and National Geographics. Each one is unique! Does not include downloads.

Simon Joyner and the Bruces-

Simon came through town and gave me two new tracks recorded with Alex McManus of The Bruces. Cutty Sark (Vic Chesnutt cover) and Tell Me That Old Story Again. Simon spray painted with a hand-cut stencil onto clear picture disc sleeves.

Adam Ostrar -Former Manishevitz front man gave me two studio tracks (Morning Said and Spare Me) and got wild dropping stuff on top of the covers and spray painting around it.

Arrington DiDionysio -
This is an older release with a new lower price. Arrington came into town on his "This Saxophone Kills Fascists" tour and put together a band with Golden Boots and some other dudes and played some freaky improv skronk jazz. Then Arrington painted the covers. His art is usually MUCH more expensive than this, and you get a unique watercolor!

Well, Hope you had "a rad summer" and you "stayed awesome". I've been busy with other projects, just got done with a whirlwind Three Shows in Three Countries in Three Weeks European tour (with bonus non-show stops in Morocco and Germany) with SM Wolf, and repairing lathes for sale. But, got some excellent stuff coming up, and one BIG release for this time!

also, Note that for some reason, my URL hasn't been working on some browsers, so you have to go to http://piaptk.limitedrun.com

-Remember that shipping per item (when shipped together) drops significantly with multiple items. So please stock up and buy a bunch! But, if you order a preorder item and want your other items shipped sooner, please place two different orders.
-Remember that I love you.

1) Upcoming Instant Merch Machine Sessions – For those unfamiliar, Instant Merch Machine is a series I do for bands that come through Tucson on tour. It takes on a few forms, but the idea is the same... I cut singles while they work on handmade sleeves, and we make however many we can in a few hours (usually 50-80) before they get back on the road and take half with them. I sell the rest to recoup costs. Previous artists include Arrington DiDionysio, Spaceface, and SM Wolf. Now, I've got Simon Joyner, Adam Ostrar (Manishevitz), and Fruit Bats (!!!!!) coming in Back to Back to Back at the end of the month! Stay tuned for those.

2) Michael Nau – Less Ready To Go LP! Standard AND Deluxe 2xLP version!

I had the pleasure of touring Europe with Michael almost exactly two years ago, cutting direct to disc at private encores for five lucky folks each night. Michael is a prolific, insanely great songwriter, and an all around incredible dude. If you haven't heard his last few solo records, you might recognize him as the voice and songwriter behind Page France and Cotton Jones Basket Ride (a band he had with his wife Whitney, and probably the most beautiful combination of vocal harmonies ever... and I'll stand on Lindsay Buckinghams coffee table and say that).

I've been wanting to do something else with Michael ever since the tour discs we did before the tour (we also released a CD-Record for him), and finally that day has come... and boy is it a doozy and a PIAPTK Family affair, with almost everybody involved having some tie to PIAPTK.

Less Ready to Go was produced by Scott McMicken (Dr Dog) and Engineered by Nathan Sabatino (ex-Golden Boots, and my good buddy who I co-own land in Joshua Tree, CA with), and the band is made up of Scott, Zach Miller (Dr. Dog), Seth Kauffman (Floating Action), and Benny Yurco (Grace Potter and the Nocturnals).

Michael really wants this album to be absorbed as a whole and has decided not to release a "single". So, for a limited time only, stream it here! https://soundcloud.com/orgmusic-1/sets/michael-nau-less-ready-to-go/s-KDlBd

Less Ready to Go is Co-Released on physical media by PIAPTK and our good buds at Org Music (who not only do most of Mike Watt's recent output but also reissue records for a ridiculous and diverse roster of artists like: Sun Ra, Coltrane, Nirvana, Sun Records, Bad Brains, Daniel Johnston, Replacements, Sonic Youth, etc. It gets DEEEEP.)

2xLP DELUXE EDITION – Ltd Ed of 350 on White Vinyl with Bonus LP “A Peace and a Ripple”
During the recording of Less Ready To Go, Michael “accidentally” recorded an entire albums worth of solo tunes. To me, nothing beats the raw power of Michael's voice and songs with bare bones accompaniment. A Peace and a Ripple will ONLY be available on this LP and Michael wants to keep it only available in this limited physical format. You will not be able to hear it anywhere else!

The Bonus Edition includes:
Less Ready To Go LP on White Vinyl (only colored vinyl edition)
A Peace and A Ripple LP on White Vinyl in handsilkscreened sleeve
Exclusive 11x17” Poster

PS... There will eventually be an Almost Halloween Time version of this, but there will only be 50 made, and Luigi is hella busy (Adam and I hung out with him in Bari, Italy for a few days), so it will just come out when they come out. They will, as usual, be beautifully hand painted.

About Less Ready to Go from Michael - “We recorded these songs at hi-dez in Joshua Tree. It happened quickly. For each song, we’d do a live take, then switch instruments & do a live overdub on top. It was a fresh way to work.
Going in, I was sure I had at least one song to do - we started there, and a couple days later it felt like a record was finished. I got scooped up by whatever happened those couple days - felt good to be moving. Any time I try to contrast one record, or process, from the previous one, it becomes more clear that it’s all pretty much the same thing. I think I’ve been ‘working on an album’ every day for the last 12 years, yet I always feel underprepared. I’m lucky to get to make music with people who’s energy can supersede my self doubt. That’s the thread through all this. “

About A Peace And A Ripple from Scott McMicken - “Most of us were in Nathans' (engineer) shipping container control room and Mike was alone in the tracking room singing freely through a bunch of tunes. There happened to be some mics still on and it was a totally random assortment of room mics left up from the previous song we recorded. It just happened to have a beautiful sound to it with Mikes solitary moment. Nathan had the idea to just start recording it and we told Mike and he proceeded to explore through a bunch of songs and ideas while we sat in the control room in awe of the seemingly limitless beauty that Mike possesses. Im so glad he decided to make that moment available to others. It was totally off the cuff and unplanned and makes for such a beautiful window into Mikes gift.

3) Presto Recording Co. Shirts!

As some of you know, I've been DEEEEP into record lathes for over a decade now. And the old Presto machines have always been my bread and butter and my main obsession. Well. As it turns out, the Presto Brand Name Trademark was abandoned in the late 50s... and since I am one of the main restorer/repairmen of them, and I am remanufacturing a lot of the original parts, I bought the trademark, so I now own the company. I'm working on rebranding a lot of my record cutting gear, but in the mean time, I printed up some T-Shirts to kick the whole thing off. Available in very large sizes as well! Black with White print or Heather Grey with White Print.
